Sándor Márai and Naples. The bitter taste of freedom

Documentary Film

Directed by GILBERTO MARTINELLI

In 1948, the Hungarian writer Sándor Márai decided to move to Italy to escape the arrival of communism. He moved to Naples from 1948 to 1952. He wrote important novels for linguistic identity and for freedom of expression. In Naples he finds a great humanity and dedicates to the city two important writings: the diary "Terra, Terra" and the novel "The blood of San Gennaro". In 1952 he was forced to emigrate to America where he remained until his death in 1989, the year in which the communist regime in Hungary fell. The film contains a selection of his most important phrases extracted from his literature. It is a film that highlights the torment of a writer, a man, a Hungarian.
